Healthy Adventures: Your Guide to Staying Active and Eating Well While Traveling

So you're going on a vacation and worried about losing the progress you've made with your health and fitness. Now what?

Traveling can be challenging when you're working to make positive changes in your health and lifestyle. But it doesn't have to be. Today, we're looking at tips on staying healthy while on the go, including healthy snacks to pack, making healthy choices when eating out, and staying active while traveling.

Healthy Snacks to Pack for a Road Trip or Air Travel

Fast food and junk food are so dang convenient. So when traveling, it can be super tempting to grab something unhealthy. That said, if you prepare before you leave home, you can bring healthy snacks that will keep you satisfied and energized. Here are some ideas for healthy snacks to pack for a road trip or air travel:

  • Fresh fruit such as apples, bananas, and grapes

  • Nuts and seeds such as almonds, cashews, and pumpkin seeds

  • Energy bars or protein bars

  • Trail mix made with nuts, seeds, and dried fruit

  • Cut-up veggies such as carrots, celery, and peppers with hummus or nut butter for dipping

How to Stay Healthy When Eating Out

When we travel, we're more likely to eat out. God knows that making healthy choices at restaurants can be difficult. Back in the day, I used to travel for work, and I know that most restaurants will let you order grilled chicken and veggies - even when it's not on the menu. Here are some additional tips on how to stay healthy when eating out:

  • Look for restaurants that offer healthy options such as salads, grilled meats, and steamed veggies

  • Choose water or unsweetened tea instead of sugary drinks

  • Ask for dressings and sauces on the side so you can control how much you use

  • Avoid fried foods and opt for grilled, baked, or steamed options

  • Share a meal with someone or ask for a to-go box right away to save half for later

How to Stay Active While Traveling

It's not always easy to get to a gym while traveling. Don't worry, there are many ways to get moving and stay active while on the go. Here are some ideas:

  • Take a walking tour of the city or explore on foot

  • Rent a bike or scooter and explore on two wheels

  • Pack resistance bands or jump rope for a workout in your hotel room

  • Take a yoga class or try a new workout class in the area you are visiting

  • Swim or walk on the beach if you're visiting a coastal location

Items to Bring from Home to Stay on Track

When planning your vacations - It's helpful to bring a few items from home that can help you stay on track with healthy habits. Here are a few ideas:

  • A refillable water bottle to stay hydrated (*if you plan to stay active on vacation, you may also pack some electrolyte tablets to maximize your hydration).

  • Healthy snacks (individual servings of nuts, protein bars, individual packs of protein powder, etc.)

  • Workout clothes and shoes to make it easier to exercise

  • Resistance bands or a jump rope for a quick workout in your hotel room

  • If you're staying in a hotel, you can request a mini-fridge and visit the local supermarket to stock up on healthy options to keep on hand.

Traveling doesn't have to mean giving up your healthy habits and lifestyle. With some planning and preparation, you can stay on track and feel your best while on the go. Happy travels!
